If there are more and more web 2.0 tools out there to use, how will our society shift into a more conservative mode? Will we stop using desk/paper calendars? Will we stop using paper/written correspondence? What issues do you see arising from this change to new technology?

We also recycle thousands of pounds of paper a year including old and tattered books.
We are looking into a new program to help our older books find a better home. We are talking with Better World Books about their program. http://www.betterworldbooks.com/
This is their environmental impact statement: Environmental Impact
* Saved over 6,454 tons of books from landfills * Reclaimed more than 680,000 pounds of metal shelving from libraries across the United States * 2,376 tons of carbon offset on Betterworld.com sales

"We also recycle thousands of pounds of paper a year including old and tattered books.
" This is awesome! You should create a page on this wiki dedicated to the topic of recycling books. We do this in more ways that actual recycling- though book fairs and sales of used items to the public. This is great! Keep us posted.

I think an incentive for printing less is a great idea. Maybe a cache of selections, like picking out prizes at the arcade. Jump drives, pens or accessories. Some people aren't going to care no matter what, but some people will have fun earning prizes.

"I wonder if they have any left that the Library could use." That's interesting- even if they don't have any left, we could inquire as to the cost of buying so many in bulk. If I recall, they didn't have a ton of storage space, but the fact that we're rewarding good behavior may overshadow that.

Over in another thread we're talking about switching to electronic delivery in our ILL/DD office. This will save paper as well as save time.
The question is how do we advertise this? We need to think of ways to promote what we're doing.
Here at NSU we've switched to a committee-run system, and there is a PR committee. Should we create a sort of "packet" of the ideas we're doing and turn it into the committee?

"maybe a packet as you suggested and a quick presentation on the main website, or even a link to a YouTube explanation video." That's not a bad idea. We could get technical about it- not only with this wiki but with other web based demonstrations as well. A You Tube demonstration would definitely be something worth looking in to.

Hey everyone.
With Spring Break upon us we can all unplug the items in the area that don't need to be plugged in during the break. This will help stop energy drain that items use when we leave them plugged in.

National Geographic this month reported that they compost the waste from their corporate cafe. How does anybody feel about that? Seems like it could come with its own issues, but may provide significant benefits.

That's a really interesting concept! I would be willing to bet we could compost our coffee grounds. I wonder what other kinds of biodegradable waste our cafe produces.
We have a wide variety of things for sale, but they tend to be "packaged" food- meaning, bags of chips and candy bars as opposed to any real sandwich like material. There are cafés other places around campus that could possibly make more use of composting that we can.

This is a global event that I just found out about. It looks like you sign up to turn off your lights to help stop global warming.
What do you think about doing this as a business? Several businesses have already signed up to participate- if we had found out about this earlier, we could have made an event out of it.
What about signing up for this next year? It's a good idea.

We have a couple of options for sending articles electronically--email and Odyssey. Email should be fairly easy to implement; Odyssey will require tech support to get us up and running. It's definitely time to look at moving forward with this! : )

"Perhaps at our inter-campus ILL/DD meeting we can set goal dates for implementing electronic lending" Definitely! I think that the only way we can logically implement this is to set goals and dates. We also need to think about procedures- we all need to be involved in this.

"Another mobile solution is already available to you. Millennium iii should have a function that you can enable, allowing patrons to request that call numbers be sent to their cell phones via text message. Aside from being green (saving paper) and eliminating the need to write call numbers on your hands, it's just plain cool! Look into it. I'm not sure what version you're running there. " OMG that's so cool! I had no idea that there was something out there like this. I'm absolutely sure that we don't have Millennium iii, but perhaps it's time for an upgrade??

maybe the answer is more along the lines of recycling already used materials into bookmarks, or maybe promoting the use of non-disposable bookmarks, or at very least making sure that bookmarks no longer in use are disposed of properly.

"making sure that bookmarks no longer in use are disposed of properly." Perhaps we could print something on there like "and don't forget this is recyclable too!"

So you can't turn all the computers off every night, but you can take a few actions in order to minimize energy use when applicable. Set your computers "power profile" to go to SLEEP mode after a certain amount of disuse (this probably is already the case with most, but I thought it was worth noting) Turn monitors and unnecessary peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.) off at night or during extended absences. These are some the most power hungry devices in your office. Anything else? Anybody?

"So you can't turn all the computers off every night" I actually spoke with one of my tech-savvy coworker about this bit, and she said that we COULD turn our comps off over night, that they would just update the next morning when we turned them on. I think our problem is that we have so many computers- two labs and then two sections out on the open floor. It would be impractical to shut them all the way down every night. I wonder what impact we would have with just turning our stuff off, if it would even have an impact at all.

It's one thing to find things to talk about. It's another to do stuff! Even little things make a difference. So what can you change today, even right now by making a small adjustment? What effect does it have? How will it effect the little things you do tomorrow? Walk , or bike instead of drive, make instead of buy, give away instead of throw away, restore instead of abandon, change instead of accept.....

"So what can you change today, even right now by making a small adjustment? What effect does it have? How will it effect the little things you do tomorrow? " Well said! I think that's what we're focusing on here- what are the little things we can do every day on the job that could make a big impact on the future? A lot of the things we've been talking about is how it seems like we're all waiting around for the government to show us the way- and that's not happening. What we have to do is make small adjustments in our every day lives (like buying disposable doggy bags) that will have a big impact on our future.

Since this wiki is set up to discuss protecting the environment in the work place, I would ask that professional judgment be used while editing this wiki. We will set the rules as we go- and hopefully we won't need any!
Treat everyone nicely!
